Information for New Taxi Drivers & Taxi Operators

This information is provided for people looking to become drivers or operators in the taxi industry. More information is available at Aerial’s Driver Training school (61261570).

 

Aerial Reception provides information for jobs and drivers wanted, how to become a Taxi Driver, and the various websites where you can obtain more information regarding the Taxi industry in Canberra.

 

BASIC PROCESS OF BECOMING A TAXI DRIVER:

 

  1. Find a sponsor with the assistance of Aerial Capital Group
  2. Apply for a Police character check
  3. Complete a Medical check at Health Services Australia
  4. Complete a minimum of eight to ten hours jockeying before attending the training school.
  5. Complete training course including;
    1. Complete a test radio booking
    2. Complete 30 minutes dispatch centre training at the base
    3. LPG Dispensing test (Verbal)
    4. Pass Theory Test
    5. Pass Practical Test
    6. Wheelchair Test
  6. Complete a minimum of thirteen hours more jockeying
  7. Acquire a “T” endorsement on driving license from Department of Urban Services
  8. Appear in uniform at Aerial Capital Group base and agree to;
    1. Abide by rules, regulations and by-laws
    2. Network affiliation and Cabcharge agreement

 

When all these stages are complete Aerial Capital Group will issue you with a network identification number and PIN allowing you to work on the Aerial Capital Group network.

This whole process generally takes around 8-10 weeks to complete.

Training School

The training course is conducted by Aerial Capital Group at the Taxi Training School, 24 Kembla St, Fyshwick. Bookings for the course can be made by phoning the training school on (02) 6126 1570 between Monday and Friday.

 

Medical Check

Call Health Services Australia on (02) 6269 2001 for an appointment. The Health Services Australia offices are located on the first floor of Health Services Australia House, 15 Bowes Street, Woden ACT.

 

Police Character Check

Forms are available from Aerial Capital Group, at 24 Kembla St Fyshwick, or the Government Shopfronts.

 

Trainee Drivers must:

  • Be at least 20 years of age
  • Have held an ACT Provisional or Full (not Learner, Restricted or Probationary) car licence or driver licence of a higher class (or Australian equivalent) and have held such a licence for at least 3 years to be eligible to apply for a Public Vehicle Taxi licence
  • Applicants with a foreign driver licence must have held a Full Australian car licence or driver licence of a higher class for a minimum of 1 year within the last 5 years
  • Pass a medical test
  • Pass a Police character check

Uniforms

Authorised driver uniforms are compulsory where a taxi is affiliated with a fleet within the Aerial Network. There are two uniforms, one for the fleet you are in.

All uniforms are to be clean, neat and tidy at all times.

 

Men's Canberra Elite Uniform:

    Shirts

  • Chambray, long or short sleeved
  • Overgarments

  • Pullover, or Vest in Navy
  • Lumber Jacket in navy
  • Trousers

  • Trousers or Shorts in navy with CTIA logo

Women's Canberra Elite Uniform:

 

Ladies may elect to wear any of the items of clothing listed under the men’s section. In addition, ladies may choose from the following;

  • Skirt/Trousers

  • Full skirt 8 gore elastic sided, Slacks, shorts or culottes in navy or taupe colour - Neat n' Trim or similar wardrobe label or design, embroidered with CTIA logo.

All garments are to be embroidered with the approved CTIA logo.


    Footwear

  • Shoes are to be black or brown. Ladies may wear dress sandals with heel support and navy shoes. When short socks are worn with shorts, the socks are to be predominantly white. Long socks worn with shorts are to be a walk sock, white or a single pale colour.
  • Neat and Tidy

  • A uniformed driver must be neat and tidy. Shirts are to be tucked into trousers and shorts and when wearing long socks they are to be pulled up.
  • Breaches of uniform requirements can result in disciplinary action.

Taxi Drivers

At the completion of training, Taxi Drivers are expected to know;

  • The relevant Road Transport (Public Passenger Services) Regulations 2002 and Canberra Elite' By-Laws.
  • When to apply the various fares.
  • How to handle the different methods of payment including account work and EFTPOS.
  • The correct radio procedures on voice.
  • Locations of taxi zones.
  • Places of interest including accommodation, churches, clubs and regular pick up points in Woden, Belconnen, Tuggeranong, Gungahlin and the City.
  • Shortest practical routes.
  • Canberra's history and tourist attractions.
  • Correct emergency procedures.
  • Required standards for driver presentation and car care.
  • The standards of customer service for passengers, WATs and courier work.
  • The roles of Airport commissionaires and procedures for lost property.
  • Procedures following accidents involving taxis.
